- Nu e vorba de el , e vorba de noi. Desi ne numaram printre cei care au luat atitudine de partea evreilor in vremea prigoanei, avem un sentiment ciudat al culpei.

Se apleca, lua in maini un bulgare si-l sfarama intre degete cu o placere infricosata. Mainile ii ramasesera unse cu lutul cleios ca niste manusi de doliu. Sorbi mirosul, frecandu-si palmele.
Apoi incet, cucernic, fara sa-si dea seama, se lasa in genunchi, isi cobori fruntea si-si lipi buzele cu voluptate de pamantul ud. Si-n sarutarea aceasta grabita simti un fior rece, ametitor...
Se ridica deodata rusinat si se uita imprejur sa nu-l fi vazut cineva. Fata inca ii zambea de o placere nesfarsita.
Isi incrucisa bratele pe piept si-si linse buzele simtind neincetat atingerea rece si dulceata amara a pamantului. Satul, in vale, departe, parea un cuib de pasarti ascuns in vagauna de frica uliului. Se vedea acum mare si puternic ca un urias din basme care a biruit, in lupte grele, o ceata de balauri ingrozitori. Isi infipse mai bine picioarele in pamant, ca si cand ar fi vrut sa potoleasca cele din urma zvarcoliri ale unui dusma doborat. Si pamantul parca se clatina, parca se inclina in fata lui...
